Firearms Training
Members of the Stillwater Police Department who are recruit officers undergo an intense five day firearms training program. The purpose of the program is to familiarize the recruit with the SPD firearms program and prepare them for the CLEET Basic Police Academy. Recruits learn firearms safety, policies, procedures, law and use of force as well as gun handling and marksmanship skills. At the CLEET Basic Academy, Recruit Officers are required to shoot qualifying scores with their duty sidearm as well as the police shotgun. When the Recruit Officers return from the CLEET Academy, they enter the Field Training Officer Program.
Firearms training is a continuing process for the officers of the Stillwater Police Department. Officers are required to shoot a qualifying score semi-annually with the handgun, and annually with the shotgun and rifle. Firearms training is also conducted throughout the year. The training consists of basic shooting and marksmanship fundamentals, as well as practical and realistic training. Courses of fire include stationary and moving targets, as well as reactive targets.
