K-9 Unit

The Stillwater Police Department Canine Unit utilizes highly trained police canines to assist in a variety of specialized, and often dangerous, circumstances. The canines have proven to be an extremely valuable resource in the effective investigation and suppression of criminal activity. The K-9 Officers are assigned to the unit full time and work on regular scheduled patrol shifts. They are also on-call and available for use by patrol division, special operations team, special projects drug investigators as well as being regularly utilized by surrounding law enforcement agencies.

All Stillwater Police Canines are dual purpose dogs. This means they are utilized for the detection of illegal drugs as well as patrol functions including:

Building and Open Field Searches
Tracking of Fleeing Criminals or Lost Persons
Searching for Discarded Evidence
Crowd Control
High Risk Criminal Apprehensions
Handler Protection

In order for an officer to become a K-9 handler he must be a police officer for a minimum of 18 months, have satisfactory evaluations, and complete a testing and interview process. Final selection is at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
