A specialized unit under the Criminal Investigations Division, the Special Projects Unit works a variety of assignments. With a primary focus on point-of-sale alcohol violations and drug investigations, the Special Projects Unit may be monitoring a drug transaction utilizing surveillance equipment or patrolling bars and taverns searching for alcohol law violations and disturbances.
Members of Special Projects receive advanced training in areas such as undercover drug investigations, handling confidential informants, and surveillance techniques. Because of the types of cases which they investigate, Special Projects works closely with various law enforcement agencies including, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, and the Alcoholic Beverages Law Enforcement Commission.
In addition to their primary role, members of Special Projects also assist the Criminal Investigations Division with a variety of duties such as processing crime scenes, conducting surveillance, and processing evidence in the crime laboratory for fingerprints .
