Sometimes Special Project Investigators are
hard to find because members of the Special Projects Unit handle a number of specialty
functions in addition to their investigatory role of point-of-sale alcohol violations,
narcotic enforcement, and vice operations. They may be hiding in a dark alley to witness a
drug transaction or processing (examining) evidence in the crime laboratory. The
investigators who, sometimes on their hands and knees, collect hairs, fibers,
fingerprints, footprints, and tool-marks at a major crime scene are Special Project
technical investigators. The uniformed officers patrolling bars and taverns on bicycles
are also Special Project Investigators. Officers assigned to the Special Projects Unit
possess a willingness to investigate prolonged investigations that usually involve using
highly specialized equipment. For example an embezzlement investigation of a local
business may involve setting up surveillance cameras, dusting documents with traceable
powders, using psychological questionnaires, or any number of covert investigative
techniques. Laboratory examinations include everything from lifting electrostatic
dust footprints to lifting fingerprints from documents and/or objects, to the latest in
DNA technology.
