HONOR GUARD |
"To honor those who have gone before us, who have served in the line of duty". |
|
The Stillwater Police Department (SPD) Honor Guard has been in existence for the past 20 years; albeit in an "unofficial" capacity. Currently under the guidance of Sgt. Mike Jenkins, a 13-year veteran of SPD, the Honor Guard has become both an "officially" recognized and a formally organized unit. The function of the Honor Guard is to honor police officers, whether they be retired or on active duty, who have passed away. These honors are performed in a para-military style funeral service, flag ceremony, and 21- gun salute (as the family wishes). They also perform at civic functions such as Flag Day, Fourth of July, etc. Presently, the Honor Guard is a part-time volunteer unit. Although a military background is not required for inclusion into the unit, most all of the members are veterans from the various military services. In order to maintain the dignity and solemnity of the service, the Honor Guard members get together once a month for training on the drill, funeral rites, and the flag ceremony.
