Between June 1998 and May 2001 SPD's K9 Unit consisted of Sergeant Mike
Jenkins and his partner, Laika a female Malinois. Laika was initially
trained in Belgium in basic obedience and drug detection. After their
introduction to one anther. Sergeant Jenkins and Laika completed a six
week K9 Academy at the Von Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana
On their return they were assigned to the patrol division working primarily
on 1st watch (nights). Laika quickly established her reputation in drug
detection and became a trusted member of the SPD team. She attended
shift briefings with her fellow officers and assisted in man investigations.
In 2000 - 2001 Laika was involved in 32 search warrants, 49 building
searches, and 47 area searches. She conducted 197 vehicle sniffs
leading to 144 vehicles searches. These searches netted 141 drug
finds, and resulted in the arrest of 147 criminal suspects.
In addition Laika conducted 8 tracks of fleeing criminal suspects resulting
in the apprehension of 7 of these individuals, and stood by countless time
providing security for her brother and sister officers.
For these services Laika was recognized by the Association of Oklahoma
Narcotics Officers as the best K9 in the State of Oklahoma for 2000/2001.
Laika was diagnosed with hip dysphasia and although still enthusiastic to
work, she was compelled to an early retirement in May 2001, and now resides
with Sergeant Jenkins as a valued member of his family.
